So the game makes it pretty clear that Dr. Wily infected Bass with his prototype of the Maverick Virus and that’s what drives Bass’s actions for most of the game until the very end. What I’m wondering though is this: Did Wily stage his own kidnapping, or was Bass actually acting on his own due to the virus? Wily’s dialogue when he makes his appearance in his BIG ASS machine makes it seem a lot like the latter (with the implication being that Wily decided to just roll with it after the fact since his “kidnapping” helped to cover up his true intentions), and if that’s the case, it would be a nice nod to continuity as far what the robots of the X era are capable of as far as free will is concerned…
Based on what Wily said, it seems like Bass and the other SWN series robots being infected by the virus was entirely accidental. I’m sure Wily intended to use the virus as part of another scheme for world domination, but after his own robots got infected by it, he had little choice but to work with Dr. Light until he was able to get his robots back under control. The kidnapping of Wily was probably very much real, but Wily was able to get the best of his captors and recover in the end.
Just my theory.
It’s a good theory, but if the previous Classic series games have established anything, it’s that everything we see involving Wily (up until Big Machine time) is ALWAYS part of his plan, he’s never in any real danger. If Wily actually was facing a real threat and was working with Dr. Light sincerely (at least until he could get his robots back under control), it’d be interesting to see the gaps in the storyline filled in somehow (like via a comic or something), especially to explain how Wily turns the tables on Bass and the other robots post-“kidnapping” – we know full well that Bass has no love lost for Wily and probably WOULD hurt or even kill Wily if anything could circumvent the core programming Wily gave him not to, including the virus.
It’s true that in the Classic series everything is part of Wily’s grand plan, but this isn’t your typical Classic series game, so I have no problem with how this was handled. And that is actually a good idea. I’d love to see a comic or something to fill in the gaps.
